A Eulogy by Anne Wallace - Violet's daughter

Created by Kate 9 years ago
Violet moved to Hadfield with her mother during her school days attending Castle Hill Secondary School. She started her working life in the Wages Office at Dinting Vale Print Works, where she met her future husband Ernest. They married in December 1939 at St Andrew’s Church and set up home with her mother at 192 Newshaw Lane. Their elder daughter Anne was born in 1943, her second daughter Susan in 1947, and their son Richard in 1948. Her husband was very much a provider for his family, building the first new home in Derbyshire since the pre-war days, then moving to Hyde, before taking early retirement in 1965. There life was pretty much mapped out – buy a country pub in Essex and start a new life. But one day in January 1966 the phone rang and a voice said “New York calling for Mr Regan”. The call was from Union Carbide and in today’s phraseology he was being head-hunted, and so began the next chapter. Vi and Ernest crossed the Atlantic and took up residence in Plainfield, New Jersey. Vi had a great laugh when in fear and trepidation she went along to take her American driving test. Her husband had not told her that you didn’t even have to drive – just give the correct answer to 16 out of 20 questions and you were home and dry! Twelve years later Florida beckoned in the form of smaller company called Dowdflor where he was appointed Vice-President, Production – such a grand and well deserved title. Vi was in her element – nice things to buy for the home, and shops, shops, and more shops, even taking up golf. When the time came to retire and return to the UK that too was done in style, something that was now Vi’s trademark. QE2 was the chosen carrier so that she could bring her Oldsmobile with her, and so they were back in the North of England. Vi made their home in Stalybridge to stylish and elegant, her garden being the enjoy of many. There was even a grapevine in the rear garden, one year’s crop producing enough grapes for a friend of Anne’s to make six bottles! Chateau Vi indeed. Ernest’s descent into the throes of Alzheimer’s placed a great strain on her, but she loved and cared for him until his death in 1991. Vi then started her travelling again visiting Washington DC, Florida, and visiting her friends in Utah. She joined her younger daughter Susan in Wiltshire was several years before returning “back up North” to her roots. Spending over a three years in a Residential Home her health deteriorated and she passed away on 17 July. Vi will always be remembered by us all here, and by everyone that knew her, as a beautiful, elegant, fun-loving, adventurous, much loved lady, particularly by the family she leaves behind.
